GCSE Course StructureThe GCSE examinations are normally taken in May or June towards the end of school Year 11, when the pupils are 16. The school courses take two academic years, and so commence in September at the beginning of Year 10. However, there is no age restriction, and other students can make arrangements to take these examinations. The GCSE courses correspond to Key Stage 4 of the National Curriculum. Alternatively, some GCSE courses are made up of units, and the exams are taken at the end of each unit. Such courses are often referred to as modular courses. Examinations normally take place in January and May/June. The various examining boards offer a great number of subjects and a choice of specifications, with and without coursework. The pupil's entry level for a particular subject exam largely depends on his/her results for that subject in the Key Stage 3 assessments, in Year 9. Typically, there are two "tiers" for the GCSE examinations; the Higher and Foundation Tiers. GCSE GradingGCSE results are given as one of eight grades, which are listed below together with the corresponding National Curriculum levels. The minimum pass grade is generally taken to be the C grade. It is possible for candidates to resit exams for which their initial results were lower than expected.
The range of grades is typically limited for each tier, as shown below.
It is always advisable to obtain the full details of the proposed specifications, and past exam papers, direct from the intended examining board. GCSE subjects offered by Select Tutors
